Opening Credits
A look at all the opening credit sequences, with movies and images

By Dani Moure

Farscape began life with a considerably less-than-extraordinary opening title sequence. The standout part of the sequence was easily the opening theme – a sort of tribal chant on top of an unusual beat, which really packed a punch and fitted the episodes perfectly. For the third season of the show, to signify the new direction that the show is going, the producers decided to create an all-new sequence of rather epic proportions. So here, in this feature, we take a look at the different sets of opening credits.

The Original Credits (Season 1)

The original opening credits were used for twenty of the season one episodes, and feature the original theme tune (featured on the Farscape Soundtrack), along with a voice-over (except Premiere) and a montage of scenes from the first few episodes. I must just say that I absolutely love this opening theme.

Credited Cast:
Ben Browder (as John Crichton), Claudia Black (as Aeryn Sun), Anthony Simcoe (as Ka D'Argo) and Virginia Hey (as Zotoh Zhaan). Created by Rockne S. O'Bannon.

Updated Credits (Season 1 & 2)

This opening was used for 26 episodes - the last two of season 1 ("Bone to be Wild" and "Family Ties") and all of season 2. The opening is pretty similar to the old one, featuring the same theme tune and voice-over, only a few of the scenes toward the end of the opening are added (including Zhaan and D'Argo's kiss), along with a credit for Gigi Edgley.

The Voice-Over:
The voice-over was used for both sets of credits used in seasons 1 and 2 (except for "Premiere"). This is it:

My name is John Crichton
An astronaut
A radiation wave hit and I got shot through a wormhole
Now I'm lost in some distant part of the Universe, on a ship
A living ship, full of strange alien life forms
Help me
Listen please
Is there anybody out there who can here me?
I'm being hunted by an insane military commander
Doing everything I can
I'm just looking for a way home

Season 3 Credits

A whole new opening was created for season 3 to reflect all the changes in the show. The voice-over was changed (no more being hunted by an insane military commander) to reflect the changes in Crichton's character. Not only that, but the theme was completely re-worked into a much more dramatic, and softer sound, which really grows on you and gives the show a more epic feel, fitting the new episodes well. To go along with this, the sequence of scenes used was also completely re-done, now mainly including scenes from the last episode of season 1 and the last four episodes of season 2 (although there are a few from other episodes too). In addition the credits are about 15 seconds longer, and three recurring cast members are promoted to regular cast status.

The New Voice-Over:

My name is John Crichton
[I'm lost]
An astronaut
[Shot through a wormhole]
In some distant part of the Universe
[I'm trying to stay alive]
Aboard this ship
[This living ship]
Of escaped prisoners
[My friends]
If you can here me
[Beware]
If I make it back
[Will they follow?]
If I open the door
[Are you ready?]
Earth is unprepared
[Helpless]
For the nightmares
[I've seen]
Or should I stay
[Protect my home]
Not show them
[You exist]
But then you'll never know
[The wonders I've seen]

Season 3 Updated Credits

The updated season 3 credits reflect the slight change in cast since "Self Inflicted Wounds, Part 2: Wait for the Wheel". These credits, used from "...Different Destinations", are exactly the same bar the removal of Virginia Hey from the credits, with her four or so scenes replaced with new ones.

NOTE/SPOILERS: There are season 4 spoilers ahead!

Season 4 Credits

The opening was reworked for year four, with a slightly reworked voice-over (to reflect the storyline happenings of the third season), with the montage being a mixture of images from the third season's opening credits plus some new images to account for the various cast changes. The opening remains the same length as season three, and the theme remains unchanged as they felt the season three theme was perfect and could not be bettered at this time. Again to reflect cast changes, the overall number of main cast members is chopped back down to five.
