by Dani Moure - Wednesday, March 5th 2003

Category: Old News

The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films have announced the nominations for the 29th annual Saturn Awards, which will be held this summer. In some categories, the nominations echo those from last year, with several repeating nominations (especially in the acting categories). For completionist's sake, we will list all the television nominations, with Farscape's nominations highlighted.

Best Supporting Actor In A Television Series

Alexis Denisof (Wesley Wyndham-Pryce, Angel)

Best Supporting Actress In A Television Series

Amy Acker (Fred Burkle, Angel)
Jolene Blalock (T'Pol, Enterprise)
Heather Donahue (Mary Crawford, Taken)
Dakota Fanning (Allie Keys, Taken)
Alyson Hannigan (Willow, Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
Michelle Trachtenberg (Dawn Summers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer)

So, for the third year running, Ben Browder and Claudia Black get nods in their acting categories, and the show is again nominated for Best Syndicated/Cable TV Series. Unfortunately, this year Anthony Simcoe and Gigi Edgley are not nominated (they were last year), and sadly Wayne Pygram is overlooked again, along with Raelee Hill and Melissa Jaffer. It's a shame that at least some of the supporting cast were not nominated this year, especially given that the supporting categories, particularly for Supporting Actress, seemed stronger last year. Nevertheless, a good turn out for Farscape with three nominations, equalling the excellent Alias. It's bettered this year by Angel, Taken and Enterprise, which all got four nominations and Buffy (which got 6 nods last year) and Smallville which topped the totals with 5. On a personal note, I was pleased to see Spirited Away nominated for three awards in the movie category. This is the film that deserves to win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature.

Thanks to BritAngie, our friendly neighbourhood Saturn voter, for sending us the nominations. A complete list, with non-television nominations, is available on Sci Fi Wire.
