Happy Birthday JilaCosa!

Postby KaraS on Sat Jul 30, 2005 12:31 pm

Kara looked up and down the beach. Everything looked perfect. The waves lapped gently against the sand, the evening sky was turning red and gold, the chairs and tables and BBQ grill were set up, above the high tide line and the pile of brightly wrapped presents glittered in the sunset light. The grill was warming up nicely and one of the tables was covered with a selection of salads and other summer foods. The cake was covered with candles, ready to be lit.

Kara adjusted the portable CD player while Sandworm looked through the pile of CDs she had brought.

"Genesis? Fleetwood Mac? The Beatles?" He asked dubiously.

"This is good music." Kara explained. "This is the stuff that Jila and I listened to, back when we were your age."

"The Eagles? Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers? Dire Straights? Who the frell is Jimmy Buffett?" Sandworm asked.

"Put it on and see."

Sandworm put the disk in and soon the strains of Waisting Away In Margaritaville were drifting across the sand.

"I don't know, can you dance to any of this?"

"Oh yeah." Kara said. "This is perfect beach party music."

Sandworm shook his head. "I think we need something that rocks a little more."

"Big talk from someone who's covered with sandtrout." Kara muttered.

"What was that?" Sandworm asked.

"I said, why don't you see if Crais needs any help with the BBQ grill." Kara said. "I gave him those Good Eats episodes about barbequing on tape to watch but I don't know if he did. Do you know where he went?"

"He said something about picking up spices for his dry rub." Sandworm said. "He said he'd be back in a few minutes."

Kara smiled. Crais had watched the tape.

"Is everything ready?" Kara asked.

"Yea, people should start ariving soon." Sandworm said, surrepticiously adding a couple of CDs to the pile on the table. "I hope somebody brings some more music."

"Fleetwood mac would do, though" he added.(actually, Kara, I am quite a fan of fleetwood mac ;). How did you guess I usually prefer something that rocks a bit more, though, lol? and as for what's his name, I really have never heard of him ;))

Sandworm hurredly changed the CD, and soon "Peacekeeper" was playing of the small dunes of sand.

"dunno about dancing, though," said Sandworm, doubtfully.

Kara rummaged through her CD case and added Pink Floyd and Rush to the pile. She contemplated Elton John and then put it back. She could always get it out later if needed.

"Yeah, Fleetwood Mac is pretty good. And with three vocalists in the band, their music never got dull. Shame about the drum solos though."

"Drum solos?" Sandworm looked confused.

"Yeah, back in the 70s it was the custom to have drum solos. Some of the old Fleetwood Mac live albums had some doosies. Seems kind of dated now."

Kara looked at some of the albums she had loved when she was Sandworm's age. Duran Duran. Culture Club. Adam Ant. Flock Of Seaguls. Kajagoogoo.

"Hey Sandworm, you win t he bonus round if you tell me where Duran Duran got their name from."

"Jimmy Buffet?! You don't know who Jimmy Buffet is?" Kay asked Sandworm. "He is only the best beach person in the world."

Kara was grinning when Kay looked at her. "Okay", Kay said with a grin. "Maybe he is just the best to me. How about Beach Boys?" she asked hopefully. "Bob Marley?....Okay, I guess the Eagles or the Beetles will do." She laughed at the look on Sandworm's face. "I guess there is a little bit of a generation gap when it comes to music."

Looking around she said "You did a great job Kara. This is the best place in the world to have a birthday party. Happy Birthday Jila!" Kay looked around hopefully to see if Jila had arrived yet, and then walked along the surf.

"Wow, the beach looks great! Did I hear someone say Duran Duran?" asked Chryse. "I love the story about their name."

Kara shot Chryse a look that warned her to let Sandworm answer first.
The elf nodded back and smiled. She slipped in some real beach music from Hawaii, a selection of Hawaiian music CDs from Kalapana, Kealii Reichel, Israel Kamakawioole, Kapena, and Cecilio & Kapono.

"Sandworm, are you gonna be ok near so much water? There's a lot of spray coming off the waves." asked Kayde.

"There was some sort of device left in my room with a note from Rae about putting it on before the party." shrugged Sandworm. "It seems to be protecting me from all the moisture in the air."

"Rae thinks of everything." smiled Chryse, "even when you haven't seen her in a while, she's still around."

"Kay, did you hear the story about Jimmy Buffet?" Kara asked.

"Which story about Jimmy Buffett?" Kay asked.

"I heard this on the radio. They were telling stories about the stupid things people had done." Kara said. "Jimmy Buffet left his cell phone in a resturant and it was found by the busboy who took it home. The busboy and his friends had a good time calling the phone numbers of celebrities in the cell phone's memory including Harrison Ford and George Clooney and harrassing them."

"Oh no!" Kay gasped.

"But they went too far." Kara said. "When they started harrassing Bill Clinton, the Secret Service got involved."

"Oh oh, what happed to them?" Chryse asked.

"The radio DJ didn't say." Kara replied. "Except to say that the bussboy and friends were very unhappy campers. But I can imagine, can't you?"

"There's nothing like a beach party to make a 'Parrotheads' day!" Spy said, dumping a pile of beachtoys on the ground. (Parrotheads are what the hardcore Jimmy Buffet fans are called, Sandy. Like the Deadheads, only with Margaritas and Leis, instead of Acid temporary tattoos and LSD candies. lol!)

Spy rummaged a couple of presents out of the pile of intricate beach toys and added them to the pile on the table. "He almost died a few years back, too, Jimmy did," the angel added. His seaplance crashed into the water and flipped upside down, and he barely swam out of it, before he drowned. His biography, 'A Pirate Looks at Fifty', is a pretty good read, as are his other three books, I recommend them, highly."

"Now then," Spy added lookin around. "Whose up for making a Sand City?"

"nah, only thing I know about Duran Duran is that they wrote a song called Ordinary world, which some band called aurora did a great cover of." said Sandworm, after a little thought.

He paused a moment.

"Where's Jila?"

Emram wandered over - it had been quite some time since he had seen everyone. He put a couple of CDs on the pile, and a crate of beer on the sand. He opened one, and wandered over.

"Well, I've never heard of Jimmy Buffet either," he said, " but I do know where Duran Duran got their name from. A hint - the name came from a film. If you get stuck, I'll tell you later on." He took a swig of his beer. "Help yourselves to beer," he added.
"Emram's Taxidermy, you snuff 'em, we stuff 'em!"

"Jila will be here... eventually." Kara said. "Hopefully she's having too much fun in RL celebrating her birthday with her family to check her e-mail but I'll wager that she'll be be around tonight."

Kara looked at the Angel who was surveying the beach and grinning with childlike delight as he planned where to build his sand castle.

"You know Spy, I'm not sure Sandworm knows what a Deadhead is, much less a Parrothead."

She handed Spy a lei and a margarita.

"Hello Emram, welcome back. I'm glad you know a little music/scifi history. Now we need to introduce you Brit boys to Jimmy Buffet."

Give old Jimmy a listen to.

http://www.radiomargaritaville.com/listen.aspx

I THINK this will get you some streaming audio of Jimmy Buffett. I have no speakers on this computer so I can't check it out myself.

Cheeseburger in paradise
By: jimmy buffett
1978
Tried to amend my carnivorous habits
Made it nearly seventy days
Losin’ weight without speed, eatin’ sunflower seeds
Drinkin’ lots of carrot juice and soakin’ up rays

But at night I’d had these wonderful dreams
Some kind of sensuous treat
Not zuchinni, fettucini or bulghar wheat
But a big warm bun and a huge hunk of meat

Chorus:
Cheeseburger in paradise (paradise)
Heaven on earth with an onion slice (paradise)
Not too particular not too precise (paradise)
I’m just a cheeseburger in paradise

Heard about the old time sailor men
They eat the same thing again and again
Warm beer and bread they said could raise the dead
Well it reminds me of the menu at a holiday inn

Times have changed for sailors these days
When I’m in port I get what I need
Not just havanas or bananas or daiquiris
But that american creation on which I feed

Chorus:
Cheeseburger in paradise (paradise)
Medium rare with mustard ’be nice (paradise)
Heaven on earth with an onion slice (paradise)
I’m just a cheeseburger in paradise

I like mine with lettuce and tomato
Heinz 57 and french fried potatoes
Big kosher pickle and a cold draft beer
Well good God almighty which way do I steer for my

Chorus:
Cheeseburger in paradise (paradise)
Makin’ the best of every virtue and vice (paradise)
Worth every damn bit of sacrifice (paradise)
To get a cheeseburger in paradise
To be a cheeseburger in paradise
I’m just a cheeseburger in paradise

Coda:
I like mine with lettuce and tomato
Heinz 57 and french fried potatoes
Big kosher pickle and a cold draft beer
Well good God almighty which way do I steer for my

chorus

The Hukilau Song
Jack Owens © 1948
Oh we're going to a Hukilau
A huki huki huki huki Hukilau
Everybody loves the Hukilau
Where the laulau is the kaukau at the lû`au

We throw our nets out into the sea
And all the `ama`ama come a-swimming to me
Oh, we're going to a Hukilau
A huki huki huki Hukilau

What a beautiful day for fishing
That old Hawaiian way
Where the Hukilau nets are swishing
Down in old Lâ`ie bay

Kara listened the Jimmy Buffett CD.

MARGARITAVILLE Jimmy Buffett
Nibblin' on sponge cake,
watchin' the sun bake;
All of those tourists covered with oil.
Strummin' my six string on my front porch swing.
Smell those shrimp--
They're beginnin' to boil.

Wasted away again in Margaritaville,
Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt.
Some people claim that there's a woman to blame,
But I know it's nobody's fault.

Don't know the reason,
Stayed here all season
With nothing to show but this brand new tattoo.
But it's a real beauty,
A Mexican cutie, how it got here
I haven't a clue.

Wasted away again in Margaritaville,
Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt.
Some people claim that there's a woman to blame,
Now I think,-- hell it could be my fault.

I blew out my flip flop,
Stepped on a pop top;
Cut my heel, had to cruise on back home.
But there's booze in the blender,
And soon it will render
That frozen concoction that helps me hang on.

Wasted away again in Margaritaville
Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt.
Some people claim that there's a woman to blame,
But I know, it's my own damn fault.
Yes, and some people claim that there's a woman to blame, And I know it's my own damn fault

Kara stretched out in a hammok and closed her eyes and listed th the waves and the wind and Jimmy Buffett. Life doesn't get better t han this.

(Who knew Jila's birthday party would turn into the Jimmy Buffett thread?)
